Columbia Democrats statement on XL Dissent

We, the Columbia University Democrats, officially endorse only the legal components of XL Dissent. XL Dissent is a youthrun march, rally, and civil disobedience action to be held on March 2nd, 2014 in Washington D.C. in opposition to the Keystone XL Pipeline. We endorse only its march and rally.*

Stopping climate change is one of the greatest moral issues facing our generation. A failure to act could result in irreversible consequences for our environment and for our future here on earth. The Alberta tar sands are among the dirtiest and most extreme forms of energy in the world; refining the oil is nine times more energy intensive than refining conventional oil, and would lead to an extreme increase of carbon pollution into the atmosphere.

As our campus branch of Democrats, we love our party, but we have to protect our planet if we want there to remain a party worth fighting for. For these reasons, the Columbia University Democrats endorse XL Dissent’s youthrun march and rally on March 2nd, 2014 in Washington D.C. We encourage all who are interested in participating in XL Dissent, or who request more information, to contact Michael Greenberg, msg2179@columbia.edu, or to visit XLDissent.org.

*The Columbia University Democrats do not endorse any actions which are unlawful, or could lead to the arrest of our members.
